5 Tips to Support Your Mental Health This Holiday Season

The holiday season can be joyful — but it can also be busy, emotional and overwhelming. Here are five practical, ways to look after your mental wellbeing over the festive period, shared by Bronte Civill, Registered Psychologist:
1. Set Realistic Expectations
The pressure to “make everything perfect” can creep in quickly. Give yourself permission to keep things simple. It’s absolutely okay to scale back plans, say no, or celebrate in ways that suit your energy levels, finances and values — not what you think others expect.
2. Protect Your Routines
Routines act like anchors in a busy season. Try to hold onto one or two core habits that keep you feeling grounded — whether that’s consistent sleep, regular meals, movement, or a little daily downtime. A bit of consistency goes a long way in stabilising mood.
3. Create Boundaries Around Time, Energy & Money
It’s common to feel stretched thin at this time of year. Set gentle, clear limits on what you can give — socially, emotionally and financially. Communicating boundaries early helps reduce stress and prevents burnout before it starts.
4. Prioritise Safe, Supportive Connections
The holidays can amplify loneliness or family tension. Be intentional about who you spend your time with. Choose the people who make you feel valued, understood and at ease. Even small, positive interactions can lift your wellbeing.
5. Plan Small Moments of Regulation
Tiny regulation strategies can make a big difference. Build in short grounding moments throughout your day — a few deep breaths, a mindful pause, a short walk, or anything that helps your nervous system settle. These mini check-ins help prevent overwhelm.
