IWC CHARITY GOLF DAY GIVES A LIFT TO LIFEFLIGHT

The 2021 IWC North Burnett Charity Golf Day has raised more than $2,400 for the local operations of LifeFlight.

The annual event, held this year on 14 August, drew almost 90 players to the greens at Gayndah Golf Club.

It was the fourth year the community event had been held by IWC at Gayndah Golf Club to mark National Reconciliation Week, and it has been growing year-on-year.

The amount of $2,409 includes a $300 donation from Gayndah Golf Club.

IWC is Aboriginal community-controlled, non-government and works for all people, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, as it delivers Reconciliation in Action every day.

The Charity Golf Day was an 18-hole, three-person Ambrose teams’ event, with prizes for Best Net Scores, Best Gross Scores, Nearest the Pin shots and Best Long Drive, as well as over-55s’ and juniors’ prizes. Donations from businesses and individuals across North Burnett created a massive community raffle and delivered great prizes for the golfers.

John Zahl, the North Burnett Representative on the LifeFlight Bundaberg Regional Advisory Committee, helped to man the “halfway house” barbecue on the course which contributed to the total donation.

Mr Zahl said: “This is a major step forward for North Burnett in term of health and wellbeing, and the way IWC is supporting LifeFlight in expanding timely access to acute care services outside of the region is outstanding. IWC is once again showing its commitment to, and compassionate care, for this community.”

He said LifeFlight was seeking ongoing fundraising opportunities, with its Queensland operations costing $100 million a year to deliver.

Mr Zahl said: “We are hoping to escalate our services from providing paramedics to including a doctor as part of the team that arrives on the scene. This will massively increase the quality of care LifeFlight can provide, but it comes at a cost. This is partially covered by the Queensland Government, but fundraising is a key part of our focus to build the services for our communities.”

IWC has long been established as a provider of Primary Health Care and community services in Bundaberg and North Burnett.

On 16 September, IWC officially opened a brand-new purpose-built IWC North Burnett Health & Wellbeing Community Centre in Fielding St, Gayndah, which inclusively supports all people right across the region.
